First-timer tips.
From teachers who started exactly where you are.
Slow down.
You will naturally speak too fast. Filipino kids are learning English, not chasing it. Pause after every sentence. Count to 2 silently before you continue.
Silence is okay.
When a student is thinking, let them think. Don't rush in to fill the quiet. The best teachers have learned that silence is a student working.
Praise specifically.
Don't just say 'Good job'. Say 'I love how you said that word so clearly' or 'Your pronunciation on that was perfect'. Specific praise sticks.
Your energy is the lesson.
Kids this age can't separate their feeling about the teacher from their feeling about learning. If you're excited, they're excited. Your energy is the curriculum.
You don't need to know every word.
If a student asks for a word you don't know, say 'Great question! Let me find that for us.' Then Google it together. Honesty builds trust.
